Three men have died following separate road traffic incidents in counties Dublin and Cavan, bringing the number of people killed on Irish roads in the past 24 hours to six.
In Dublin, a 21-year-old man was killed when the car in which he was a passenger left the road and hit a tree on Hartstown Road early this morning.
The 24-year-old driver of the car was taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown, where he died of his injuries.
Meanwhile, gardaí in Bailieboro, Co Cavan are investigating an incident in which a man in his 50s died after the tractor he was driving overturned.
The incident happened on the Cootehill to Mountain Lodge Road shortly before 8pm last night when the tractor the man was driving left the road and overturned. He was taken to Cavan General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The roads where both of these fatalities occurred are closed pending forensic investigations, and diversions are in place. In Galway yesterday, a two-year-old girl and her 12-week-old sister were killed when they were hit a car on the outskirts of Tuam. The two children, who were in a buggy, and their father, John Gilmore, were walking along the hard shoulder of the N17 when the incident occurred near the junction of the N17 and the Bobby Burke ring road.
The girls were named locally as Katie (2) and Grace (12 weeks) Gilmore, from The Meadows, Tuam.
Later, in Co Cork, a man in his 30s was killed when his motorbike was involved in a crash with a car yesterday afternoon. The crash happened at about 1.45pm on the R618 near Dripsey in Co Cork.
