Thousands of people around the country are without electricity this morning following last night's stormy weather and high winds.

An ESB spokesman said engineers are working to restore power to about 2,000 houses and businesses in the west, southwest and parts of the midlands.

There was damage caused to electricity lines overnight by wind-blown debris, he said, adding it was hoped power would be restored to all those affected by this afternoon.

"The system stood up quite well to last night's storm and most ofd the problems now are scattered inisolated areas," the spokesman said.
