The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern has pledged Exchequer support for the landslide which devastated areas of Glengad and Pollathomas in Co Mayo when he visited the area today.

Following a brief trip by helicopter to the coastal peninsula district where infrastructural and other damage which will cost millions of euro to repair was caused by a series of landslides five weeks ago, Mr Ahern said the objective was to repair the damage as quickly and speedily as possible.

Most of the money for remedial work would come from the Exchequer and the Department of the Environment, the Taoiseach stated.

He added that a lot of remedial work had already been done and action taken to prevent more landslides as further movement had been detected by geologists on Dooncarton Mountain.

Mr Ahern rejected claims that the Government had been slow to the aid of the more than 40 families affected by the landslides. Some eight families had been unable to return to their homes.
