Zurich - A Swiss passenger jet carrying 152 people was forced to turn back to Halifax, Canada, after an electrical short-circuit produced smoke in the plane's kitchen area, Swissair announced yesterday. The incident occurred late on Monday, less than a week after the crash of Swissair Flight 111 into the sea off Halifax, killing all 229 passengers aboard.

Meanwhile divers searching for wreckage from flight 111 have spotted more bodies, a Canadian navy official said. According to evidence pieced together by investigators after a preliminary analysis of the airliner's flight data recorder a catastrophic electrical failure could have occurred aboard the jet just minutes before it crashed into the Atlantic off Canada.

Canadian investigators said yesterday they had observed signs of heat stress on small fragments of the cockpit.
