There is growing suspicion among some political groups chat loyalist paramilitaries were involved in a gun attack in east Belfast in which a man was seriously wounded.

Mr David Keys (25) was shot at point-blank range on Monday night as he sat in his car at Cooneen Way in the Cregagh area of east Belfast.

A lone gunman is believed to have approached him on foot or on a bicycle and opened fire. Mr Keys was shot twice in the upper body. He is critically ill in hospital. A man who was arrested shortly afterwards is still being questioned by detectives.

The RUC said a motive had not yet been established for the attack but it was not believed to have been sectarian. The shooting happened in a staunchly loyalist area.
