The Army Bomb Disposal unit last night disabled a French-made smoke generator after a man came across the suspect device on a beach near Castletownbere, in west Cork. It was the third time in four days that the unit has been called out to deal with suspect devices.

On Wednesday night a 60-year-old tank shell was discovered in the attic of a house in Whitehall, in Dublin.

While on Saturday, the unit made safe a 25lb first World War shell which was unearthed in a garden at Victoria Terrace in the Dublin suburb of Dundrum. Up to 40 houses were evacuated after the live device and 20 rounds of ammunition were found by a man digging his garden.

According to the Army press office the object discovered in Cork was a smoke generator used to mark areas at sea.
