Lack of sponsorship has forced the organisers to call off the prestigious Humbert Summer School which has been held in Co Mayo every year for the last 24 years.

The school’s founding director John Cooney said that apart from funding, a key factor in the decision to call off this year’s event was the non-availability of Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Mr Kenny had been invited as the main speaker at the school’s gala dinner and was to have been presented with the 2011 Outstanding Merit Humbert Award by Nobel Peace Prize winner John Hume. A Government spokesman said last night that unfortunately the Taoiseach was not in a position to take up the invitation as he would be away on a prior engagement.
