A Dublin step-uncle has been found not guilty by a jury at the Central Criminal Court on eight charges of raping and buggering his niece in the late 1960s.

The jury also disagreed on a verdict on a further 12 rape and buggery charges. The jury spent more than three hours considering its verdicts. The 48-year-old accused had pleaded not guilty to committing the buggery and rape offences on the alleged victim in the years 1967-1970. Earlier he had pleaded guilty to 19 charges of indecent assault on the same victim in the same years.

Mr Justice Carney remanded the defendant on continuing bail for sentence on May 14th on the indecent assault charges.
