Spollen leaves prison until trial

A former garda and Co Offaly footballer, Mr Pat Spollen, who is facing charges of dangerous driving causing death, was freed on bail by the High Court yesterday on the understanding that he reside at the Cluain Mhuire centre in Athy, Co Kildare, until his trial.

Mr Spollen was being held in Arbour Hill Prison, Dublin, charged with driving a vehicle in a dangerous manner, causing the death of Joseph Mulcahy, at Fassaroe, Bray, Co Wicklow, on June 23rd, 1997.

Mr Justice Kinlen fixed conditional bail of £5,000 in cash, as well as an independent surety of £5,000 and Mr Spollen's agreement to report to Athy Garda station.

Mr Spollen is due to appear in Bray District Court on Thursday.
