At least half of couples whose relationships have broken down are forced to stay living under the same roof because they can’t sell their homes, the secretary of a support group for separated men said yesterday.

Speaking at the opening of a new drop-in centre for the Limerick-based organisation Men in Limerick Experiencing Separation (Miles), Séamus Scott said the recession was the reason the organisation needed the new premises to open five days a week.

The new Miles centre, at 25 Glentworth Street in Limerick city centre, is the only dedicated facility of its kind in Munster.

Established in 2002, the charity offers support to up to 300 people from across the midwest region, providing support to men experiencing family breakdown.

“I’d say about 50 per cent of people who are splitting up can’t move and they are locked in a limbo situation because they can’t sell the house,” said Mr Scott.
