Merrion Square Open DayMarking its 250th anniversary, a series of free events takes place in Merrion Square in Dublin today.

It includes Merrion Square 250, an exhibition of maps and drawings at the Irish Architectural Archive (10am-5pm). Other highlights include a free visit to the Number 29, Georgian House Museum, to experience what life was like for residents and staff. There are musical performances throughout the day in the Pepper Canister Church.

Salute, Swords

Salute, the military vehicle and re-enactment show, takes place in the National Show Centre in Swords. Highlights include a 1953 ex-Army Willys Jeep, one of two in existence, and a Chieftain main battle tank. The show is open today and tomorrow from 10am-5pm. Admission is €10 per person or €20 for a family ticket.

National kite surfing championships

The championships take place on Duncannon beach in Co Wexford. More than 50 junior riders from Ireland and elsewhere will compete in a series of course racing and freestyle events. Attractions for spectators include water zorbing, archery, face painting and power kite lessons.

Lobster, Crab and All That Jazz Festival, Dalkey

The Dublin suburb celebrates its maritime and musical heritage. Events include a celebrity masterchef competition, cookery displays, live music and free guided tours of Dalkey Castle.

Dunmore East Bluegrass Festival

The 17th annual festival is expected to draw crowds of more than 20,000. Acts include Jeff and Veda, the Jack Grace band, Desert Aces and Mickey and the Scallywags. Some 50 gigs, indoor and outdoor, are scheduled.

Kilkenny Gay Pride Festival

“Out for the Weekend” is in its third year and offers a diverse range of performances, art, theatre and music throughout the weekend.

Carrigtwohill Cultural Street Festival, Cork

Face painting, pony rides, lucky dip, Taekwondo displays, sheep shearing, pig on the spit, alpaca animals, vintage cars and steam trains are among the attractions of the festival which takes place tomorrow from 2pm-6pm.
