Iarnrod Éireann should consider using the old Ballyfermot train station to facilitate those planning to travel over the bank holiday weekend, according to Fine Gael Dáil candidate, Ms Catherine Byrne.
The Dublin South Central councillor said today the old station, now a CIE works base known locally as 'Khyber Pass' would be a possible alternative for the company during the closure of Heuston Station next weekend.
Heuston Station, which serves all main routes out of Dublin bar the Belfast line, is due to close over the May bank holiday weekend for work on the doubling of lines between Dublin and Kildare.
Routes affected include the Dublin to Waterford, Cork, Limerick and Kerry, Galway and Westport lines. The Arrow service between Dublin and Kildare will also be cancelled.
The work is expected to include the replacement of the Sarsfield Road bridge between Heuston and Inchicore and the addition of five platforms at the station.
Ms Byrne said "while I sympathise with the crux Iarnrod Éireann are in, as the Sarsfield Bridge in Inchicore does need work, the Ballyfermot station is a possible solution to the problem with feeder buses operating from the CIE works to Heuston and vice versa".
