Michael Farrell, senior solicitor with legal rights organisation Flac, has been appointed the Irish member of the Council of Europe’s European Commission against Racism and Intolerance.

Mr Farrell was a member of the Human Rights Commission until its mandate ended in September.

He was nominated by Minister for Justice Alan Shatter following an open advertisement in August this year.

He replaces Dr Mazhar Bari, whose term expires this month. The term of office is for five years and entails about 25 days’ work a year.
