Six people have been arrested in Limerick in an operation involving armed gardaí after a gun was pulled on a man and a gardaí pursued a car in the city last night.

Gardaí at Roxboro road are investigating the events, which started at around 10.15pm last night, a statement from the Garda press office said today.

A car with four youths on board pulled up at John Carew Park, Ashe Avenue and one of the occupants produced a firearm, pointing it "in the direction of a lone male", the statement added.

"No shots were fired and no persons were injured. The car left the scene with all four youths still on board and went in the direction of Our lady of Lourdes Church, Childers Road, where a firearm was discharged. Again no persons were injured."

The Garda statement said the car, a red Limerick-registered Hyundai Coupe, then went towards Ballinacurra Road and on to Crescent Shopping Centre and from there to the Regional Hospital. It then took the new by-pass to the Cork road.

"As a result of the two incidents detailed above and the reports of the ensuing dangerous driving this car was successfully stopped by Roxboro gardaí assisted by members of the ERU at Ballywilliam, Croom, Co. Limerick."

All four youths were arrested and a firearm was recovered. The four are currently detained at Roxboro Road and Henry Street Garda stations under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, according to the Garda.

"Further investigations were carried out which led to two further arrests being made in the Limerick area today - a 37-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man.

Both are being detained at Roxboro Road Garda station - the woman under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and the man under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The Garda appealed to the public for assistance in relation to the incidents. Anyone with information or who may have seen the car in any of the locations involved last night is asked to contact the incident room on 061-214349.

Information can also be given to the Garda confidential telephone line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

A Garda spokesman said no shots were fired by gardaí during the events last night.  He confirmed gardaí were forced to pursue the car before it was stopped and the youths were arrested.
