Poor signage has resulted in coaches carrying overseas tourists to Brú na Bóinne and Newgrange in the Boyne Valley ending up in a housing estate in Co Meath.

A local councillor has called for action to ensure proper signs are put in place, particularly as the county council spent close to €20,000 on a review of the signage which has yet to be implemented.

Councillors say there are signs directing coaches into St Mary's Villas, an estate in Donore village. "The residents are getting used to seeing German tourists and others disembarking there thinking they have arrived at one of the wonders of ancient Ireland," said Cllr Dominic Hannigan (Lab).

The review of the signs was undertaken by a committee that included representatives of the Office of Public Works, the Department of the Environment, Meath County Council and Louth Tourism and was completed in 2004. The council's area manager, Tadhg McDonnell, said then that the parties to the review had not agreed on its outcome.

He said a meeting was held two months ago to try to make progress on the matter and, "it is not intended to replace the signs until an agreed scheme can be designed, agreed and erected".

In the meantime, the signs directing traffic to the Brú na Bóinne centre, just outside the village of Donore on the southside of the Boyne, are causing confusion. "I want action to be taken on foot of the report and before the summer season is in full swing to avoid further mix-ups," added Mr Hannigan.

"This is one of the premier attractions in Ireland and attracts hundreds of thousands of people to Meath every year. The least we can do is get the signs pointing in the right direction!"
