A serving garda was arrested this morning as part of a long-standing fraud investigation.

The garda (50) was detained after a search of home in New Ross. The search is continuing this afternoon.

He is being held at New Ross Garda station under the offences against the State Act

A Garda spokesman said the officer, who has been suspended from duty, was arrested "as part as an investigation into criminal activity over a number of years".

Gardai in Wexford supported by the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation were involved the operation.

It is understood the investigation relates to a form of white collar crime but the garda spokesman refused to comment.
