There has been an informal understanding going back many years that the Kerryman of the Year should not be a politician. Previous winners have included Professor Brendan Kennelly, footballer Mick O'Connell and writer John B. Keane. This year an exception was made and FF deputy Denis Foley made it to the shortlist for his exceptional work on the Public Accounts Committee. Recent events ensure he will not progress any further.
