A security officer who fell through a ceiling in Dunnes Stores premises while she had been observing "goings on in the changing rooms" with a view to checking out if there was theft yesterday began a High Court claim for damages.

Ms Mary Glennon (50), of South Circular Road, Dublin, has brought a claim against Steadfast Security Ltd following her fall at Dunnes Stores, Stephen's Green Shopping Centre, Dublin, on June 29th, 1993.

Liability has been admitted and Mr Justice O'Donovan has been asked to assess damages.

Opening the case yesterday, Mr Sean Ryan SC, for Ms Glennon, said she had fallen some 12 to 14 feet through the ceiling and suffered injuries to her back and right arm.

Ms Glennon was a security officer until the incident and Steadfast Security was the Dunnes Stores security subsidiary.

Mr Ryan said Ms Glennon had been instructed to climb up into the ceiling space and observe the "goings' on" in the ladies' fashions changing rooms with a view to checking out if there was theft.

Counsel said she was uncomfortably "perched" in the space. She had tried to get down and was making her way along girders when she fell 12 to 14 feet "flat bang on to the ground."

The hearing continues today.
