A former soldier who spent several years in Thiepval Barracks told Channel 4 News last night that security covering computer surveillance of vehicles, civilian passes and checks at the main entrance had been lax.

He claimed that on one occasion a stolen car was driven at speed after getting through the barriers and managed to get close to the residence of the GOC.

The ex-soldier claimed the authorities had been trying to cover up security lapses.
