A security guard who launched an unprovoked attack on a man after drinking a cocktail of Red Bull, whiskey and lager has been jailed for six years by Judge Yvonne Murphy at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Darren Murray (23), of St Mark's Drive, Clondalkin, was on bail at the time for robbery.
Murray was in an aggressive mood due to the drink cocktail when he attacked Mr Tony O'Sullivan (54), Mr Michael O'Higgins SC, defending, said. The incident occurred on August 20th last year.
Mr O'Sullivan spent nine months in hospital care. He was resuscitated in St James's Hospital but then underwent surgery in Beaumont because of the seriousness of his head injuries.
Murray pleaded guilty to intentionally causing serious harm to Mr O'Sullivan. He also admitted counts of robbery on April 23rd, 1999, and of larceny on May 7th, 1999. Mr O'Sullivan is now totally dependent on the help of two friends.
