Vienna - Passers-by in central Vienna scrambled for portions of what was claimed to be the world's biggest omelette made from free-range eggs yesterday.

The Austrian Agriculture Minister, Mr Wilhelm Molterer, helped to stir 6,700 free-range eggs in a giant frying pan measuring 2 metres in diameter at the city hall square.

The bid for entry in the Guinness Book of Records was organised by animal-protection activists to draw attention to the cramped conditions of millions of battery hens in the European Union.
