A first-time offender who took part in acts of vandalism at two Dublin primary schools that caused €17,000 worth of damage has been remanded on continuing bail to monitor his progress while on a crime diversion programme.

The 17-year-old boy pleaded guilty earlier at the Children's Court to criminally damaging the Mary Help of Christians girls' national school and the St John Bosco boys' national school, which are on the Navan Road in Dublin.

The teenager, with two other youths, had smashed in 52 windows at the schools, on May 28th last year.

He had no previous convictions, had not reoffended, and his family were willing to pay for the damage he had caused, the court had also heard when evidence was given in June.

The case had been adjourned until yesterday to allow a family conference, arranged by the Probation and Welfare Service, to take place.

Judge Fitzpatrick adjourned the case until next February to monitor the boy's progress.
