Savage has red-card overturned

Galway’s Derek Savage has had last weekend’s red card rescinded by the Games Administration Committee (GAC).

Galway’s Derek Savage has had last weekend’s red card rescinded by the Games Administration Committee (GAC).

Savage was sent off on Sunday during Galway’s league meeting with Donegal, a game the Tribesmen won by two points, following an incident with Eamonn Doherty. Savage had a personal hearing with the GAC this morning at which the sending-off was overturned.

The Galwayman had been facing a four-week ban.

In a statement released this afternoon, the GAC explained that after viewing video footage of the tackle in question, it was decided the action did not warrant a straight red card.

Galway had maintained that Savage’s tackle was merely a shoulder with no malicious intent, an assertion supported by the GAC.

The GAC also announced that Darren Fay of Meath has received a 12-week ban after his red card on Sunday whilst playing against Monaghan. The ban takes effect from the date of the game and will rule the full-back out of the remainder of Meath's league campaign.

Pat Forde of Wexford and Longford’s Paul Barden were both suspended for four weeks after they were sent off during a bad tempered clash at Enniscorthy earlier this month. Fermanagh’s Paul Brewster was handed the same punishment for his red card against Cavan on February 17th.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s postponed Allianz National Hurling League matches between Dublin and Galway, Westmeath and Kildare and Offaly against Tipperary have been rescheduled for Saturday, March 30th.
