A police officer has been arrested in South Africa for the execution-style killings of five petrol attendants in Cape Town, a senior police official said today.

"People who commit acts like this have no place in the police service," Western Cape community safety minister, Mr Leonard Ramatlakane, said of the policeman who implicated himself in gunning down the petrol attendants.

The five men, all with gunshots wounds to the back of the head, were found dead in the early hours of Monday morning at a petrol service station on the Cape Flats, east of Cape Town.

About 1,000 rand (€98) had been stolen from the service station.

Mr Ramatlakane said an off-duty sergeant (35) was arrested in connection with the murders after a tip-off and admitted to his "dastardly action" yesterday.
