The Medical Council is seeking legal advice on whether it will be obliged to hold disciplinary hearings in public because of a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights.

The ruling followed an application by a French doctor who had been disciplined.

While the council's hearings are private, decisions to discipline doctors go to the High Court and are published. A spokesman said this might satisfy the European Court ruling.
