Fine Gael yesterday called on the Government to introduce new legislation to regulate the sale of new homes as a matter of urgency. The party's spokesman on housing, Mr Brian Hayes, said the Government should implement Law Reform Commission proposals that new home advertisements ought to specify the number of houses offered for sale at each price level, and the period for which prices are fixed.

The commission has also proposed a ban on the sale in phases of different houses in the same development. "This practice, which is a feature of the current Irish housing market, can only be stopped by the introduction of new legislation," said Mr Hayes.
