RTE is to be allowed to establish a new radio channel, which wild broadcast classical music and arts.

Yesterday the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht, Mr Higgins, announced his approval for the new station "in principle", as was reported in The Irish Times two weeks ago.

However, though Mr Higgins has approved the station, its establishment is not certain. It is contingent on a national transmission system being available and subject to the necessary finances being found. The new service will extend the current FM3's evening service to a full service.
