Shamrock Rovers 2-1 Dundalk
After extra-time
Dundalk’s reign as FAI Carlsberg Cup champions has proved to be shortlived but it took extra-time for Shamrock Rovers to dethrone Martin Murray’s men.
Rovers had enjoyed the better chances on the night but were kept at bay by some solid work from John Connolly in the Dundalk goal.
The crowd at Tolka Park were kept waiting until the 61st minute for the breakthrough when Noel Hunt fired home for Rovers.
But with their grip on the trophy on the wane, Dundalk grabbed a lifeline two minutes from time with a dramatic equaliser, courtesy of Martin Reilly, to force extra-time.
Both sides traded efforts to no avail in the first period of extra-time but with the tie heading for penalties, Rovers’ marksman Tony Grant pounced to gain revenge for the Hoops semi-final exit last season.
