A retired priest from Co Cork has been given a suspended sentence after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in the 1980s.

Mary Morgan (46) told Cork Circuit Criminal Court she had waited until her mother had died before making a complaint about the assault by Canon Denis Forde.

Ms Morgan said she considered the conviction rather than sentence to be the most important thing.

Forde (73), with an address at the Presbytery, Dunmanway in West Cork, was suspended from his ministry at the time of Ms Morgan's first complaint against him in 2000. Forde had denied the four charges of indecent assault in the sacristy of the Church of the Incarnation in Grange in Cork in 1981 and 1982.

However, in February, a jury found him guilty on all four counts and Judge Sean O Donnabhain imposed a 12-month suspended sentence. The judge also ordered that the priest's name be placed on the sex-offenders register for five years.
