The PSNI in Derry is investigating an attack in which a 14-year-old schoolgirl was stabbed outside the gates of a school in the city.

The girl received wounds to her arm and back in the attack outside StCecillia's in the Creggan area of the city just after school ended on Mondayafternoon.

A police spokesman said : "She received three minor stab wounds, two to theback and one to the arm. She was taken to hospital and received stitches to thewounds before being discharged."

Police said they were contacted by a doctor in the hospital who informed themthey were treating a girl for stab wounds and officers took a statement from theteenager.

The school was contacted by police and has launched its own investigation.Principle Kathleen Gormley said while she had yet to have the opportunity tospeak to the girls she had spoken to both the girls' parents.

She said the parents had been in contact with each other and praised them forthe "responsible" way they were dealing with the matter.

Ms Gormley stressed that the incident happened outside school grounds andoutside school hours, but said they were concerned about what had happened andfelt they needed to get to the bottom of matter.
