A Police Service of Northern Ireland officer narrowly escaped injury in a pipe bomb attack on his car in east Belfast.

The incident occurred when the officer heard a load explosion while at home early this morning.

A daylight examination by British army bomb experts revealed a sophisticated explosive device had been left under the car.

The PSNI said they are following a number of lines of inquiry but have refused to speculate on who was behind the attack.

They have asked that anyone who observed suspicious activity near the Upper Newtownards Road area at the time of the attack to contact them.
