A new green initiative that seeks to make primary schools more energy-efficient was unveiled today.

The An Taisce Green Schools Energy Project aims to increase pupils’ awareness of environmental and sustainable development issues through classroom studies.

It is hoped the students will transfer this knowledge into positive environmental action in the school and also in the wider community.

The project, sponsored by ESB Independent Energy, was announced today at Our Lady of Victories Infant School in Ballymun, Dublin.

“Educating children in the efficient use of scarce resources and its impact on our environment is where the solution lies, and this is where a real difference can be made,” said Energy Minster Eamon Ryan.

“This new initiative will bring businesses and schools together to demonstrate the practical application of energy efficiency.”

The new project will run alongside the existing Green-Schools programme, which involved 3,000 schools throughout Ireland.

Among the first companies to sign up to partner with local schools in their areas to work on the new project were Dell, Tesco Ireland and Superquinn.
