Danny McAllister, a dissident republican prisoner at Portlaoise Prison, called off a hunger-strike on Monday after going without food since New Year's Day. McAllister (45) is serving an eight-year sentence for his part in the attempted armed robbery of a Securicor van in Co Wicklow in May 1998.

A prison spokesman said yesterday there was no negotiation by them with McAllister during the protest.
