The Socialist Party TD, Mr Joe Higgins, has called for the Amsterdam Treaty referendum to be postponed until September.
"It would be unthinkable that the Amsterdam Treaty referendum would be held on May 22nd along with the referendum on the issues relating to Northern Ireland," he said.
He said he had written to the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, on the matter and will be calling on the Government to make a statement on it when the Dail reconvenes next week.
