The results of a postmortem carried out by State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy on a newborn boy found in a house near Westport, Co Mayo, are not being made available immediately by the authorities.

Supt Mick Murray said last night he had been given details of the findings but was not prepared to divulge them. “I intend to deal with this matter in the most sensitive manner possible,” he said.

The infant’s body was brought to Mayo General Hospital after being discovered in a house in a rural area some miles from Westport. It is understood the mother, after giving birth in the home she shares with her husband and a number of their children, was admitted to hospital at about 5am yesterday. Following her admission, gardaí went to her house, where they discovered the infant’s body.
