Three men called to the victim's house and asked for him by name. When he came to the front door, they shot him three times in the head and back.

He was brought to Tallaght Hospital where he was pronounced dead. After the shooting, the three men were seen running away from the scene towards two parked cars which were then driven away at speed.

The first is described as a Ford Focus or similar vehicle, the second is described as a small hatchback car, dark colour. Gardai say they do not know of any motive for the killing.

The scene of the shooting was preserved and a forensic examination was taking place. The post mortem was delayed because the State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy was in Limerick.

A full murder investigation has commenced and an incident room has been opened at Tallaght Garda Station, telephone 01-6666000.
