A post mortem has begun on the body of a man who was shot dead in Cork early this morning.

Gardaí have begun a murder investigation after the father of one was shot in the chest with a shotgun. He was officially named this evening as John Butler (20) from Knocknaheeney Avenue, Cork.

He was among a group of people standing outside a chip shop in Grá na Bráthair when a fracas broke out at about 1 a.m.

He died on his way to Cork University Hospital.

The scene outside the chip shop has been preserved and will be examined by members of the Garda Technical Bureau later today.
