Portugal has ordered disinfection measures for people arriving from Britain to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth.

Agriculture Minister Mr Luis Capoulas Santos said passengers arriving by air or sea would be required to clean their shoes on a special mat.

All animal-based food products arriving from Britain will be subject to special examination, the minister said.

Veterinary teams were assigned to 14 border posts to ensure the measures were observed.

The virus can be passed on by humans through breathing or sneezing and can lurk on clothes or footwear.
