Cross-channel round-up:Cash-strapped Portsmouth, the only other Premier League club in FA Cup action tonight, had the fright of their lives before they eventually defeated Coventry City at the end of extra-time.

Pompey lived dangerously all night and first required a fortunate equaliser in the final minute of regulation play when Stephen Wright’s own goal left the score 1-1. Leon Best’s superbly taken half-volley had broken the deadlock for Coventry midway through the first half.

In extra time Aaron Mokoena broke Coventry hearts when the substitute headed home the winner with virtually the last touch of the game.

Avram Grant’s side, the 2008 winners, will now take on Sunderland at home in the fourth round.

Derby’s game against Millwall also went into extra time after finishing 0-0 after 90 minutes. One goal apiece in extra time and the sides couldn’t be separated as Derby eventually went through 5-3 on penalties.

Birmingham City set up a fourth-round clash at last year's losing finalists Everton after ending Nottingham Forest's 18-match unbeaten run with a 1-0 win.

Barry Ferguson broke the deadlock against the run of play with a left-footed shot in the 62nd minute, sending the in-form Premier League side through at the expense of the Championship visitors.

Birmingham also had a Cameron Jerome effort cleared off the line in the closing minutes of the third-round replay at St Andrew's.

Sheffield United earned a ticket to Premier League Bolton Wanderers after beating Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers 3-2 in a replay at Loftus Road featuring a flurry of three goals in the space of four second-half minutes.

Cardiff and Bristol City must replay their all-Championship third-round tie after drawing 1-1.

In Scotland Chris Innes netted the only goal as St Mirren picked up all three points in their SPL clash against Aberdeen (1-0).

Innes steered home Andy Dorman's 74th-minute corner to add to his recent strike against Kilmarnock and take Saints to within a point of Aberdeen in eighth place.

Charlie Mulgrew and substitute Darren Mackie both hit the woodwork as Aberdeen, the lowest scorers in the SPL with 13 goals in 18 games, again paid the price for failure in front of goal.
