The Policing Board of Northern Ireland today unanimously agreed on the design of the badge for the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
The badge features a Saint Patrick's Cross surrounded by six symbols - a crown, laurel leaf, harp, shamrock, torch and scales of justice.
The Northern Ireland secretary now needs to approval the emblem. However, Dr Reid said he was "delighted that the Policing board has been able to reach cross-community consensus on a new design".
"I am very grateful for the work the Board has done and it bodes well for the future of policing in Northern Ireland," he added.
