Belgrade - Police seeking the arrest of a leading antigovernment activist surrounded opposition headquarters yesterday after security forces again battled protesters on the streets of Belgrade. Opposition sources said police wanted to detain Mr Ceda Jovanovic, a senior member of the Democratic Party and one of many activists inside the offices of the Alliance for Change, an opposition bloc co-ordinating the demonstrations.

"The police forces are visible all around the Alliance for Change headquarters in Simina street," Mr Jovanovic said. He has been prominent in 10 days of rallies demanding the resignation of President Slobodan Milosevic. Activists had barricaded themselves inside the building, an Alliance lawyer, Mr Srdjan Radovanovic, said earlier. Police had been outside since late on Thursday but had not so far tried to enter, he said.
