NORWEGIAN explorer Borge Ousland, the first person to cross Antarctica on foot, alone and unaided, said yesterday he was tired but very happy and relieved to have fulfilled the dream of his life.

Following some of the route taken in 1911 by countryman Roald Amundsen, the first person to reach the South Pole, Ousland (34) walked 2,840 km in the longest polar trek ever accomplished. He reached the South Pole on December 19th. He arrived at New Zealand's Scott Base on the Pacific coast of Antarctica on January 17th after leaving Berkner Island in the Weddell Sea on November 15th.

DJ Chris Evans lost his job at BBC Radio One yesterday two months ahead of schedule after failing to turn up for the Breakfast Show. Millions of listeners tuning in at 7 a.m. were greeted with a make shift show hosted by weekend DJ Kevin Greening and featuring almost continuous music.
