A readable but rather over-journalistic account of an area of history which is now becoming much exposed: the Nazi plundering of European Jewry for their wealth and art treasures. Not only the Nazis either, since people of many nations were involved in what was, in effect, an international racket. Switzerland comes out of it badly, as recent revelations tell us, but there were other avenues for stolen Jewish wealth, including Spain and Portugal - countries which did not persecute them but were also not averse to fattening off their goods and artefacts. The treatment, however, is sometimes shallow and sensationalised, and a more precise, less generalised and sweeping book is now due on this particular subject.
