Mervyn Owens denied Colm Moriarty back to back wins in the South of Ireland amateur title today after beating the Athlone based golfer by one hole in the final at Lahinch Golf Club, Co Clare.

Owens from Mallow defeated City of Derry's Michael McGeady by a 4&3 in the semi-final after Moriarty's 4&2win over fellow Ireland team member Justin Kehoe had ensured the defending champion's participation in the final.

Despite defeat Moriarty is still virtually guaranteed a place in the Britain & Ireland Walker Cup side to take on the Americans at Ganton in September. The team will be selected next week.

Semi-Final

C Moriarty bt J Kehoe 4/2
M Owens bt M McGeady 4/3

Final

M Owens bt C Moriarty 1/0
