Over 70 jobs are to be lost at a contact call centre in Co Clare, it was confirmed this morning.

Agilisys, which provides of contact centre services to public and private sector organisations in the UK, said today it intends to close its facility in Shannon on June 12th with the loss of 71 jobs.

Work that is currently performed at Shannon will transfer to the company’s other contact centres at Barrow-in-Furness and Rochdale in England, the company said.

Staff were notified of the decision earlier this month.

“This decision has been driven by the current economic conditions, with the strength of the euro against the pound meaning that overhead costs in Shannon are proving to be uneconomic," said Agilisys chief executive Kay Andrews.

"It is a very difficult situation as we have an outstanding group of individuals in Shannon. We hope that some of them will take the opportunity to join one of our contact centres in the UK. We also hope that economic circumstances will revert and we can return to Shannon in the near future," she added.
