The Orange Order is to call on the Parades Commission to review its decision to ban a 12th of July demonstration in Derry city.

The commission has restricted the main parade to the mainly unionist Waterside area of the city, causing anger among local Orangemen.

It ruled that only one local lodge and band would be permitted to parade from the Cityside, departing from the loyalist Fountain area.

The ruling was in response to objections from the nationalist Bogside Residents Group over proposals for the parade to march through the Diamond, in the city centre.

It is understood the Orangemen have sent a formal request for a review which includes a plan for a non-contentious extension of the route which would parade through the Fountain area.

A Commission spokesman said he was expecting to receive the written submission some time today.

The body would then meet tomorrow morning to consider the proposals before making its final decision.

Around 10,000 Orangemen are expected to descend on Derry for the annual 12th of July demonstration.
