Port Hueneme - Two loud noises were heard coming from the tail section of Alaska Airlines Flight 261 minutes before it nosedived into the Pacific Ocean, killing 88 people, US investigators examining the cockpit voice recorder said last night.

Mr John Hammerschmidt, of the National Transportation Safety Board's investigation of Monday's crash off the coast of southern California, also told reporters that retrieving the bodies of the victims had begun.
