Eight schoolchildren and one teacher drowned and another student is missing after a small wooden walkway collapsed in a tourism park in Argentina.

A group of schoolchildren - aged 12 to 13 years of age - were taking a photo on the walkway when it fell into the Chubut river near the town of Trelew.

School officials said that 50 students and 25 adult chaperones from Buenos Aires were on a three-day excursion to the area.

Witnesses said that a sign posted nearby warned the walkway could support only three people.
