Northern Ireland Electricity has said it will take years to win back consumer confidence after thousands of homes were left without electricity for several days following the Christmas storms. On BBC Radio Ulster, NIE's managing director, Mr Harry McCracken, said a preliminary review of the effects of the storms had shown failings in the company.

"It's not easy to find 1,200 faults and tell individual customers when their supply is going to be restored, but that's our job and we will need to do our job better than we did it this time," he said. The SDLP MP for South Down, Mr Eddie McGrady, is leading a delegation to meet the NIE chief executive, Mr Patrick Haren, at Stormont today.
