Mbabane - The editor of Swaziland's state-owned newspaper has been shot dead, apparently in an attempted car hijacking, colleagues said.

Sandile Ntshakala (29) had just finished editing the latest edition of the Swazi Observer yesterday morning when armed men sprayed his car with bullets, Mr Wilton Mamba, news editor of the newspaper, said.

The attack occurred in Mbuleni township, about six miles from the industrial city of Manzin.
